Last Wednesday in Digger Deeper we studied Colossians 4:6. I shared with you that I loved how God gives us the scripture we need at the perfect time. I also told you I had a story behind this scripture but didn’t have time to share it. Today I’m back to share the story with you.
Mornings around my house can be pretty rough. I am not a morning person and neither is my daughter while my son wakes up way to early, ready to go full steam ahead the minute his feet hit the floor. This difference in morning mood causes many morning arguments between my kids as they argue, fuss & fight at the breakfast table.
Wednesday morning of last week was particularly bad causing me to show the ugly side of Mommy. While all 3 of us were behaving like a 3 year old coming unglued, God stopped me mid-sentence and grabbed hold of my thoughts. Colossians 4:6 pretty much grabbed hold of my tongue and (as would happen to me when I was a kid and said a bad word) washed my mouth out with soap.
I realized my words and actions were not seasoned with salt. At that moment they were not building my children up and encouraging them, instead I was behaving just like them.
So, I took a deep breath and quietly told both of my children to close their eyes and I began to pray. As I prayed Colossians 4:6 the mood diffused and our anger subsided. I then reached for my bible and instead of doing our normal morning devotion from a book we sat at the table and I explained the verses I just prayed.
Were we still a little cranky on our way to school? Yes, but the difference was that we no longer were speaking to each other with ugly, hurtful words. Instead we were focused on how we could encourage each other.
There are times when God gives us verses to pray and meditate over before a situation arises so that we can lean on His Word to change our thoughts and actions.
Has God given you a verse for you to pray and meditate over? I would love for you to share an example in the comments below.
In His Calm,
