Trust in the Lord
Do you trust in the Lord?
Do you trust Him to handle the daily issues of making your schedule work when you are being pulled in a million directions. Do you trust Him to answer the quick prayer before you head into a meeting with your boss? Do you trust Him to bring to mind the correct answers for the test after you’ve been studying all night? Do you trust Him to provide direction when faced with two different choices that are both good for you?
Now, do you REALLY trust in the Lord? I mean with your WHOLE heart and mind? Do you trust Him not only with the easy but also with the hard?
Do you trust Him to provide financially when your bank account is left to pennies and it’s not pay day? Do you trust Him when the diagnosis didn’t come back as you hoped? Do you trust He knows and loves your children and is with them no matter what choices they make? Do you trust He will lead you down the right path even when you don’t know the next step to take?
Our key passage today gives us instruction and then tells us God’s response when we obey these instructions.
1. We are called to Trust in the Lord
Proverbs 3:5 tells us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” When we understand something with our minds we often say we “grasp the concept” as if we can hold it in our hands. Holding something in our hands gives us the feeling of control because we touch it and feel it. But trusting IN the Lord goes much deeper than touching and feeling physically.
In verse 5 we are reminded to TRUST IN God with our whole heart. If you’re anything like me you want to know what that means. The heart is the deepest part of who we are; it’s the life giving source of the oxygen and nutrients our body needs to function adequately.
When we trust in the Lord with our whole heart we rely on Him to be the life giving source to sustain the deepest parts of who we are and what we need.
2. We are called to Acknowledge Him.
Not being able to touch and feel Him physically goes against our natural understanding and desire to be in control. This is when the hard part of acknowledging and submitting to the Lord comes into play. The author of 1 Chronicles 28:9 writes
“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.”
We acknowledge God when we serve him with our whole being – heart and mind. And as we submit and seek Him we find Him and truly Trust In Him.
3. God will Direct our Paths.
Remember the questions I asked earlier? I asked a number of questions but the ultimate question is
Do you REALLY trust in the Lord? I mean with your WHOLE heart and mind? Do you trust Him not only with the easy but also with the hard?
When we trust God with every part of who we are and submit to him rather than trying to control and understand every detail he will direct us. I know it’s so much easier to say than live out but this is where true trust and faith come to life.
It’s falling on our knees with hands wide open giving the worry of our finances, the grief of the diagnosis, the fear of the consequences of our children’s choices and the questions of the unknown path over to Him and allowing Him total control.
Trusting In the Lord is often times a painful and difficult journey but the beauty of experiencing the blessings of His faithfulness to work in our lives is worth the journey.
In His Calm,
